We opened our doors for the first time on Saturday July 9th, 2022. It is a day I will never forget. Friends and strangers walked into this little place that I dreamed up and found music that they love, who could ask for anything more.
But the first story I want to tell happened the day before. I unlocked the door that Friday and invited friends to stop by. Sure, I wanted to sell some records and get some practice with my cash register but I also wanted them to see what I had been up, what I had created. Not long after the door was unlocked a woman with who I think was her daughter walked in. They asked if we were opened and I said yes as long as they knew it was a “soft open.” They looked around for a bit and the woman told me her daughter had recently got her first turntable and wanted to spend some birthday money on records. The young woman was probably 14 years old, at most.
I have worked hard to not be the grumpy, critical music fan. Certainly I have my own personal tastes but I do my best to not judge people too harshly by their tastes. Especially young folks who are making their own musical path.
After 15 or 20 minutes they brought a copy of Nirvana’s Bleach to the register. My heart was beaming inside, exploding in fits of joy. Who knows how many records she already owns or what she knows about Nirvana. But there she was in my little shop on her own musical journey, deciding that today was going to be the day she brought Nirvana home. She made the commitment to give Nirvana a try. Maybe she will love it, maybe she will find another direction to explore but the important thing is that she is on her way. A way that so many of us started so long ago. I hope I can keep this store running long enough to help shepherd a bunch of folks on their own musical journey.
Wow!! So happy to hear this and to have found this wonderful record shop! Go Driver 8!
